Freezing of Gait in Patients with Neurodegenerative Disease

Kim Joon-Yeop
Abstract
Freezing of Gait (FOG) is a disabling condition in elderly people. It is common in the neurodegenerative disease, such as Parkinson¡¯s disease and other parkinsonian syndromes. The assessment of this condition poses challenges due to its episodic and transient nature and its frequent association with cognitive dysfunction. FOG can be experienced on turning, in narrow spaces, whilst reaching a destination, and in stressful situations. The pathophysiology of FOG is complex and poorly understood. Morphological neuroimaging study is of limited value in the evaluation of FOG, and functional imaging techniques are currently being developed to study the phenomenon. Treatment of FOG includes rehabilitation with behavioral approach, medication, and surgical treatment. The treatment of off¡¯ time FOG in PD is relatively straight forward, but on time freezing in PD and FOG associated with other conditions may be difficult to treat. A comprehensive team therapy is essential for optimum management.
